FABLAB administrators training in France

The first training of the administrators of the IASA-KPI FABLAB was conducted in France in early September of 2016. The program of training included visits to FABLABs in three cities: Lyon, Le Puy-en-Velay and Saint-Etienne.

The concept of FABLAB, its history, the “Charter”, analytical report about “global picture” of FABLAB infrastructure, types, business models, different kinds of FABLABs formation and their ways to success were discussed. During live FABLAB presentations real operating FABLABs were shown and a lot of topics including: organizational requirements, managerial skills needed, costs, financial support models were covered.

IASA administrators have visited the best examples of FABLABs and other kinds of networked-Labs including YOUFACTORY near Pôle PIXEL, LabLab , AADN, and others.

Meeting with Isabelle LAURENT, President and co-founder of YOUFACTORY – A Fablab / Co-working space / Factory dedicated to prototyping and production of limited number of objects

FABLABs are part of new type of sharing economy giving opportunities to create almost everything.

Local communities of enthusiasts combined with right tools and collaborating one with each other are the key ingredients of success. All combined together created opportunities for startups development on the shared basis.

To run a FABLAB interdisciplinary connections are needed as well as skills for digital product design and creation and these can be achieved by creating a network of interdisciplinary passionate individuals and teams willing to implement their ideas not only in the world of bits but also in the world of atoms.

On the last day participants were invited to presentation of Telecom Saint Etienne (School of engineering at the University of Jean Monnet), Creative District “Quartier Créatif” and FrenchTech (DesignTech and Manufacturing) organized by Saint Etienne Métropole.

The “Design Tech After” are professionals meetings for startups, innovative companies, business accelerators and participants in the creative district Manufacture in Saint Etienne. These events are opportunity to bring together business stakeholder around the dynamic FrenchTech #Design Tech, to learn about current approaches and to exchange and meet new partners.

The experience gained from this visit to France has shown that FABLABs are locally-placed laboratories that provide access to different tools and CNC equipment to make almost everything. FABLABs are great places to exchange experiences and show creativity.

The impact for university includes students and new ideas exchange and local startups creation for shared economy.
